A Somatic Practice of Recognition

a workshop offered by Impulstage at Lake Studios Berlin, September 2023

In Preparing to See Each Other: A Somatic Practice of Recognition we speak and move through experiences of migration, race, identity, and (dis)integration.

I start from an assumption of a room full of expertise and remain flexible to respond to the needs of the people and space.

In this workshop, inspired by Audre Lorde’s An Open Letter to Mary Daly, we use writing, movement, social dance, and dialogue to move through the messiness and possibility of interracial intimacy and community.

How can we prepare to witness each other in our whole-ness? How can we prepare to hold each other more fully?

Mary,

I ask that you re—member what is dark and ancient and divine within yourself that aids your speaking. As outsiders, we need each other for support and connection and all the other necessities of living on the borders. But in order to come together we must recognize each other. Yet I feel that since you have so completely un—recognized me, perhaps I have been in error concerning you and no longer recognize you.

– An Open Letter to Mary Daly, Audre Lorde
